Three more Nintendo Switch games have seen sales pass the 10 million mark, with Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Party joining the exclusive club.
Normally a video game is considered to be a hit if it sells more than 1 million copies worldwide. Obviously, that depends on how much it cost to make but when more niche, lower budget Switch games like Astral Chain pass the mark it’s an important milestone for them.
Most games never reveal their sales figures but a really big title like Call Of Duty of FIFA can manage around 20 million. The best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch is Mario Kart 8 with 24.77 million, according to Nintendo’s latest financial results, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already sold over half that in just six weeks.
New Horizons’ total by the end of March stood at a staggering 13.41 million, already beating the lifetime totals of all of the previous entries in the series.

The game’s release date just as coronavirus lockdowns were instigated around the world worked very much in New Horizons’ favour, but it’s not the only game to recently pass the 10 million mark.
Splatoon 2 sales now stand at 10.13 million, making it one of a select few Nintendo franchises to hit 10 million with just a single entry (the others are Super Mario, Mario Kart, Pokémon, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Nintendogs, Brain Age, Wii Sports, Duck Hunt, and now Animal Crossing).
If it wasn’t already, that puts Splatoon in the top tier of Nintendo brands and makes the announcement of a new sequel merely a matter of time.

Although there’s actually one more franchise to add to the 10 million list, with Super Mario Party just squeaking in with 1.01 million sales. It’s the first entry in its series to do so, and again would seem to guarantee a follow-up.
Although a lot of its sales come from being a consistent seller over time, rather than an instant, Animal Crossing style smash.
Other new sales figures of note from Nintendo’s results include Ring Fit Adventure at 2.73 million, although considering it almost instantly sells out as soon as it comes back in stock numbers are largely irrelevant for the keep fit game.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now stands at 18.84 million, as the second best-selling Switch game, followed by Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Super Mario Odyssey which, coincidently, are both on 17.41 million.
Despite what fans may assume Zelda is not traditionally that big a seller, and Breath Of The Wild is by far the most successful entry in the series so far. Although in this case we know for a fact that a sequel is planned, just not when it will be out…
