Yet another video game event has been affected by COVID-19, as BAFTA announce their games awards show will become online only.
First it was a swathe of esports tournaments, then GDC and E3 2020 were cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. And now the BAFTA Games Awards have had to give up on their usual gala event in London.
The nominees for the 2020 games awards were announced last week, with Death Stranding and Control leading the pack and Metal Gear and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima due to receive a BAFTA fellowship.
But in an announcement today, organisers have said that the usual red carpet ceremony will be cancelled and instead there’ll be an online livestream event on Thursday 2, April.
‘The new format will include the announcement of the Games Awards winners and we look forward to sharing more updates in the coming weeks.’
Despite this the British Academy Television Craft Awards and Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards are still scheduled to go ahead on 24 April and 17 May, respectively.
It seems that the large number of overseas visitors, including Kojima himself, is why the games event has already been changed, as it puts more people at risk.
E3 in June is the most distant event so far to be cancelled, but many will now be wondering whether Gamescom in August and the Tokyo Game Show in September will also be affected.
