It's been a tough week for fans of The CW’s live-action superhero shows. On Friday, the network announced that Batwoman would not be returning for a fourth season. Soon after, it was announced that Legends of Tomorrow would also not return for an eighth season.
Legends of Tomorrow premiered back in 2016 as part of the network’s “Arrowverse”. The show ran for seven seasons and 110 episodes before being canceled on Friday. Co-showrunner Keto Shimizu took to Twitter after the news was announced saying, “We are heartbroken, but also immensely grateful for the amazing work our cast, crew, and writers have contributed to the little show that could”.
Meanwhile, Batwoman debuted back in 2019 with Ruby Rose as the titular hero. However, some behind-the-scenes drama saw Rose leaving the series. They were replaced by Javicia Leslie beginning with season two. This cancellation comes just a month after the show finished its third season on the network. Showrunner Caroline Dries took to Twitter to share the news saying, “Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude…Thank you, producers, cast and crew. Thank you, fans! We love you”.
While the cancellation of two veteran shows is a rarity for the network, The Hollywood Reporter is speculating that it may have something to do with the possible sale of the broadcaster. The CW’s parent companies, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Paramount Global are considering a sale of the local broadcaster with Nexstar. This potential shakeup could be the reason the network is scaling back on its run of scripted series at the moment.
