Blizzard Has Canceled BlizzCon 2021, Will Hold Global Event In Early 2022

On Twitter this afternoon, Blizzard announced that plans for BlizzCon 2021 have been canceled. Originally set to take place this November at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, the company has decided to err on the side of caution with the uncertainty around COVID-19 guidelines in California.

A short blog post details these issues and states that Blizzard doesn’t feel it will have the proper time to do BlizzCon justice this year. “The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November,” writes Saralyn Smith, executive producer of BlizzCon.

That may be unfortunate for fans of the company, but not everything is lost. BlizzCon 2021 won’t be happening, but Blizzard is planning a global event for early 2022. With a mixture of both online panels and smaller in-person gatherings, it seems that will be the replacement for BlizzCon for this year. The company promises more details in the coming months and will likely have some fun extras for fans that can make the trip.

With most states completely dropping mask mandates and rushing to return things to normal and different strains of the virus developing in other countries, it’s nice to see Blizzard take its time with getting BlizzCon right. I would rather miss another year than head to an event and catch COVID, especially since a large number of citizens have not been properly vaccinated.
