Activision typically announces a new Call of Duty game around May each year, and it’s followed up with gameplay footage at E3 the next month. Unfortunately, 2020 is not like other years and fans are still completely in the dark about the latest game–at least in terms of official details. Some bits of information appear to have leaked over the last few weeks, and we now know it will be a Treyarch-developed game call Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Here is everything we know about the game so far.
It’s A New Black Ops Game
Black Ops has been one the Call of Duty series’ biggest brands since its inception, and Treyarch’s games are known for their tremendous multiplayer and, with the exception of the campaign-free Black Ops 4, exciting storytelling. That continues this year with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Skipping the three-year development cycle and returning to the two-year approach used in the past, Treyarch is back and returns to the intrigue-focused Black Ops universe. While concrete details aside from the name are scarce, we know the game will deal with Cold War conflict, as teaser videos focused on JFK, Cuba, and East Germany. A full reveal will be held on August 26 and should provide a clearer picture of the game. Real KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov is also featured in some of the teaser footage, possibly pointing to a similar narrative style to that of the 2010 game.

It’s Being Teased In Warzone
Battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone was one of the first places to start teasing the next Black Ops game. In one of the enormous map’s buildings, you can find an RCXD vehicle, which is featured in the series’ multiplayer mode. The bunkers in the map also became available to open recently, and they contain materials and devices, including a nuclear warhead, that fit the Cold War setting. Players also made use of codes available on the teaser site to find clues in the Warzone map.
Activision has been vague about how it will announced Black Ops Cold War, but it has hinted that it could happen within Warzone itself. Despite initially launching with Modern Warfare integration, it’s going to be updated with future games’ content. This is opposed to the model used by Blackout mode in Black Ops 4.
It’s From Treyarch and Raven Software
Treyarch is known for developing the Call of Duty: Black Ops series, which has included five games thus far when including predecessor Call of Duty: World at War. It will be leading the development of this year’s game with support from Raven Software. The latter studio has never led development on a Call of Duty game but has assisted with the series for a decade.
This puts a halt to the three-year development cycle Activision has stuck to for Call of Duty over the last generation. Developer Sledgehammer Games last released a game in 2017.
It’s Still Coming This Year
Despite the ongoing pandemic delaying several other games from their initial release dates, this has not affected plans for Call of Duty 2020. Speaking to investors in May, Activision Blizzard president and COO Daniel Alegre said the game is still on track to release this year and employees have adjusted to a work-from-home structure.
No platforms were announced during this call, but during generational transitions, Call of Duty games have typically launched on both the old and new systems. It will almost certainly be on PS5 in particular, as longtime Treyarch developer David Vonderhaar posted a tweet just before the system’s official reveal. Despite this, the game was not part of the show. An Xbox Series X release is also likely to go along with PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions, but all of this remains unconfirmed for the time being. We would typically know by this point in the year what the game was called, and even likely see a snippet of gameplay. 2020 is different, however, and Call of Duty 2020’s unveiling looks to be different as well.
