CD Projekt Red wants you to know that Cyberpunk 2077 will not have microtransactions. Despite what the “clickbait” says, the team behind the highly-anticipated game reminds eager fans that the game will be a one-time purchase with no EA-style surprises. That said, there will be microtransactions associated with the multiplayer, but CDPR president Adam Kicinski insists that “we won’t be aggressive” with in-game purchases.
In a recent earnings call, Kicinski said that the goal for the microtransactions is to design them in such a way that the fans are “happy to spend money.” He expanded upon that by saying that he wasn’t being coy or “trying to hide anything,” and that they truly are trying to create a feeling of value from the things that you can purchase. This sentiment is echoed by the game’s official Twitter account, which followed the single-player promise with a reminder that mulitplayer microtransactions have been know for a year.
What the company deems “aggressive” is really up for interpretation, but one can assume Kicinski is talking about pay-to-play or pay-to-win schemes. However, he could also mean that sales won’t be intrusive, or that there won’t be updates to the marketplace every five-seconds. All that’s certain for now is that Kicinski says they want to create value, they don’t want to upset you, and they want you to happily spend your money.
Microtransactions are simply the reality of the gaming world now. Too much money is made on microtransactions for them to ever go away, or not be present in some form or another in AAA games. It’s naive to think that a big release like Cyberpunk 2077 won’t have any affiliation with the practice. It’s just that the implementation will be in a separate, multiplayer-focused experience. CDPR has a good track record with The Witcher 3’s DLC, so there’s a good precedent for it keeping its word with Cyberpunk 2077.
A lot can happen in two years, though. What’s said today isn’t necessarily binding and the people involved may change. All fans can do is keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best.
