Control's Next-Gen Upgrade Isn't Free

Control’s developer Remedy and publisher 505 Games have revealed an “ultimate edition” of Control, which includes the base game along with the two DLC expansions. The ultimate edition launches on August 27 on Steam, the same day as the second expansion, Awe, which features Alan Wake. It launches on September 10 for PS4, Xbox One, and on the Epic Game Store.

If you buy the ultimate edition for current-gen systems, you can upgrade the game for free when the PS5 and Xbox Series X systems are available. However, if you already bought the standard version of Control and its expansions, you don’t get the upgrade. You need to re-purchase the ultimate edition (which costs $40) in order to take advantage of the next-gen enhancements.

Remedy and 505 Games did not specify the reasons, technical or otherwise, that the upgrade is not being offered to existing owners. The announcement only says: “The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition.”

At a time when high-profile games like Cyberpunk 2077 (along with Xbox’s whole Smart Delivery program) are standardizing cross-generation purchases, this move is surprising and disappointing – especially given the lack of meaningful new content included in the ultimate edition.
