CD Projekt Red has lost Cyberpunk 2077’s senior gameplay designer, an employee who worked at the company for the last eight years prior to his announcement earlier today. Andrzej Zawadzki previously worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a QA tester before taking over Cyberpunk 2077’s game design unit.
Andrzej Zawadzki announced his departure on Twitter and thanked all the team for their effort at CDPR, stressing he worked at the studio for almost 8 years and it was “an honor and pleasure.” Zawadzki went on to give thanks to some specific developers at the studio, praising their passion and all the lessons they taught him during that time.
Zawadzki began work as a QA tester at CD Projekt Red several years before. He took part in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt testing, as well as both its DLCs through 2015-2016. Later he started to work on Cyberpunk 2077 as a junior gameplay designer in 2016. Over time, Zawadzki became the project’s lead game designer in March 2020, only a month prior to the initial unrealistic release date for Cyberpunk 2077 originally slated for April 2020.
The developer hasn’t given a reason for his departure, nor does he share his future plans for working in the gaming industry. Andrzej Zawadzki noted he’s taking “long holidays” for now before moving on to the next big adventure.
CDPR faced backlash on the internet after Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch, which led to Zawadzki taking long breaks from social media in January and February. He also supported Anthem’s team at Bioware recently due to Anthem Next being canceled. Zawadzki commented “game development is hard” back then and asked people not to throw stones at the studio as “it doesn’t help anyone.”
Cyberpunk 2077 is about to receive its highly anticipated title update 1.2, which was recently teased by the team. The update will include a reworked driving system, improved dodging mechanics, and will stop cops from spawning right behind your back.
According to Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, the update is currently being tested and devs will be sharing patch notes ahead of its release very soon. It is still unknown the exact date for the update, though CD Projekt Red promised to release the patch by the end of March.
