Doom RPG Gets Fan-Made PC Port

Fountainhead Entertainment's Doom RPG has been reverse-engineered and ported to PC by a dedicated group of fans. The team even managed to complete the port with graphics and sounds from the BREW version.

If you haven't heard of Doom RPG, it was a mobile game launched in 2005 that takes the protagonist from Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 and puts them into a turn-based RPG. There are scientists to speak to, computer terminals full of information, and all the usual Doom enemies and weapons—there's no chainsaw, arachnotrons, or spider mastermind though.

"As we promised, the Doom RPG port for PC is finally here," Erick194 posted on the Doom World forums. "Created using SDL2 and BREW version doomrpg.mod original file reverse engineering, this is my first port made for PC. Special thanks goes to Anarkavre as thanks to him, we got the original BREW game files."

With the BarToZip program, you can convert the doomrpg.bar file into DoomRPG.zip, letting you run the exe file. Simple. With that, you can enjoy a forgotten slice of Doom's history.

While it looks like the original '90s shooters, the story is more reminiscent of Doom 3. You're stationed on the Martian Union Aerospace Corporation installation and, as you'd expect from a Doom game, there's a security breach. There are demons, hellhounds, and rogue scientists making things significantly worse. There were three versions in total—Java, low-end BREW, and high-end BREW. If you're not versed with the technical terms, BREW stands for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless. Prior to smartphones, it was used to run more complex apps.

Doom RPG later spawned Doom 2 RPG and Wolfenstein RPG, and it even nabbed the 2005 Mobile Game of the Year. Now you can find out why all these years later from the comfort of your PC.
