Elden Ring is almost here, making it three years since FromSoftware launched Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. If you had any doubts regarding the upcoming game's quality, fear not: it is as 'Mighty' as you'd expect it to be, or probably even better, judging by critic reviews.
In TheGamer's review, lead features editor Jade King gave it a perfect score, calling Elden Ring "a modern masterpiece that surpasses all expectations," which says quite a lot considering expectations were high to begin with. Fans of the Japanese studio will be delighted to hear the game "combines Dark Souls' natural sense of discovery with the foreboding atmosphere of Bloodborne, while perfecting this combination with a combat system that feels equal parts Sekiro and Demon's Souls." Let's not to forget that all of these elements are now redefined by the fully open world.
Here's what some other leading outlets think about Hidetaka Miyazaki's new take on FromSoftware's own genre — and just take a look at all those shiny scores:
- GamesRadar+ – 5/5
- Game Rant – 5/5
- VGC – 5/5
- Screen Rant – 5/5
- Destructoid – 5/5
- Guardian – 5/5
- IGN – 5/5
- VG247 – 5/5
- Game Informer – 5/5
- GameSpot – 5/5
It's rare you find such unanimity among critics, who say Elden Ring might finally end the ongoing fan debate about which Soulslike is the best of them all, as "games like this only come once or twice in a generation and raise the bar on what the medium can offer," according to GameRevolution. Naturally, you can expect to suffer a lot while playing the game, yet it "has never been as much fun as this," GamesRadar said.
If you're here for the flaws, well, Elden Ring is still a masterful example of a Soulslike game that might just not be your thing. Oh, and it also ends eventually, which is also a shame. Some critics mention "severe performance issues" that might hamper your experience, but it seems to be an uncommon problem and will probably be eliminated fairly soon (or one hopes).
At the time of writing, the game proudly stands at 97 out of 100 on OpenCritic, and up to 98 out of 100 (for the PS5 version of the game) at Metacritic, which easily makes Elden Ring one of the highest-rated games of recent years.
Elden Ring is launching on February 25 with the pre-load already available across PC (via Steam) and both generations of consoles.
