Elon Musk Says He’s Going To "Help Humanity" By Buying Twitter

Despite there being no official confirmation as of yet that Elon Musk has finally bought Twitter, the billionaire has outlined the aims he has for the site and the reasons why he decided to purchase it in the first place. One of these reasons is apparently so that Musk can "help humanity," reiterating that he believes Twitter is a "digital town square" that is going to be "important to the future of civilization."

Musk made these comments via his personal Twitter account (thanks, BBC), specifically addressing Twitter advertisers in an attempt to clean up the types of advertisement users are targeted by. In his statement, Musk claims that there is a "great danger" that social media is separating into "far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers" but also states that Twitter will not become a "free-for-all hellscape" under his leadership and that he will try to make the site "warm and welcoming for all."

"The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence," says Musk. "The is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society."

"That said, Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences! In addition to adhering to the laws of the land, our platform must be warm and welcoming to all, where you can choose your desired experience according to your preferences…"

There are probably quite a few people out there excited about Musk's imminent takeover, although one set of people that probably aren't too thrilled are Twitter's employees. It was recently reported that Musk plans to cut Twitter's workforce by a whopping 75 percent, reducing employee numbers from 7,500 to just 2,000. The plan has been criticized by many, as fears rise over increased hacking risks and the potential increased spread of offensive and illegal material.
