Evo 2020 is going online, dropping Smash Bros. Ultimate from lineup

This year’s Evolution Championship Series (better known as Evo) has been canceled, but organizers are taking a version of the marquee fighting game tournament online. The format will be dramatically different; instead of a taking place over a single, long weekend, Evo Online will take place over the course of five weekends in July.

Evo 2020’s lineup has also changed somewhat for Evo Online, with Nintendo Switch fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate no longer part of the official tournament. Evo Online will feature “special exhibitions and content” from Evo 2020’s previously announced lineup:

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Soulcalibur 6
  • Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition
  • Tekken 7
  • Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r]

Evo Online will also feature open tournaments from the following games, which were not previously part of the 2020 official lineup:

  • Killer Instinct
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath
  • Skullgirls 2nd Encore
  • Them’s Fightin’ Herds

As previously announced, Evo Online will also host a version of the special invitational tournament featuring Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the fighting game’s 20th anniversary, which Evo organizers are calling the “20urnament of Champions.”

Evo Online will take place the following dates:

  • July 4-5
  • July 11-12
  • July 18-19
  • July 25-26
  • July 31-Aug. 2

Registration details are forthcoming, organizers say.
