Fallout: New Vegas fan-made mod looks like a whole new game

Titled Fallout: The Frontier, the fan project will be made available later today and is even scheduled to release on Steam.

Usually, video game mods tend to be fan-made fixes, cheats, or an excuse to make your character nude or add in Thomas the Tank Engine.

But sometimes you get a mod that is so expansive and detailed, it may as well be its own game. Case in point: Fallout: The Frontier.

A mod for Fallout: New Vegas, it has been in development for at least five years and, after having to miss its initial December release, is now on track to release later today via Nexus Mods at 8pm GMT/12pm PST/3pm ET.

It’s even going to become available on Steam, though it doesn’t have an exact date and is only listed as coming in January.

According to the official website, The Frontier is described as an unofficial DLC expansion for New Vegas and is set in Portland, Oregon, which has become a snowy wasteland.

Aside from featuring a surprisingly large open world comparable to New Vegas’ DLC, it promises three major questlines, more than 150 new weapons, and full voice-acting.

There are even entirely new features that weren’t present in New Vegas, like a dynamic weather system and the option to drive vehicles.

Currently, Bethesda is focused on its online game Fallout 76, which has improved somewhat after its disastrous launch in 2018. But there’s been no word yet on Fallout 5 or the much asked for Fallout: New Vegas remake.

Fallout: The Frontier will be available on PC.
