G2 and Envy, two of the biggest esports organizations in the world, can both claim championship-winning rosters. Yet, recently, the two companies have been exchanging barbs via social media. It began when Envy Gaming owner Mike “Hastr0” Rufail and G2 Esports owner Carlos “Ocelote” Rodríguez started a Twitter war of sorts.
It’s well-known that Envy has dominated Call of Duty for several years now, while G2 has excelled in CS: GO. However, after a fan responded to a tweet written by Rufail and praised him as the best manager in esports, Rodríguez answered with a laughing emoticon. Childish? Perhaps. Afterward, the two went all in and unleashed an onslaught of jabs at each other and their respective companies.
Rodríguez compared G2 to a “3 Michelin Star, fusion cuisine high-profile restaurant” and called Envy a “3 Yelp Star family bakery store,” which kind of falls short as an insult since it depends on what you’re in the mood for. Rufail responded by saying that the diss made no sense since the G2 CS: GO team was already trying to “jump ship.” This apparently didn’t sit well with Rodríguez, who called Envy a “dying dinosaur.” Envy Gaming was founded in 2007, seven years before G2 Esports.
Rufail seemed to be referring to Adil ‘ScreaM’ Benrlitom who joined Envy from G2, implying that other G2 gamers were planning on following suit. Although one could reason that these guys should have better things to do than bickering like two scorned teenagers on social media, there is a proud tradition of talking trash in sports, so maybe the esports organizations are just establishing their bona fides.
Both esports organizations have their strong suits. Envy is probably the world’s biggest Call of Duty organization, while G2 has had one of the best North American Rocket League rosters. Although it’s unclear who scored the most points in their Twitter battle royale, they can take comfort in knowing that both organizations are probably here for the long haul.
