Some of the industry’s biggest names will take part in the Summer Game Fest to provide updates, announcements, and new content.

E3’s cancellation was quite the blow to the gaming industry. What was the year’s most notable gaming event, the place where publishers tend to share their biggest announcements, is no longer possible, at least for this year.

And with E3 organisers, the ESA, not holding the digital alternative like it once planned, it very much seemed that publishers would fall back on hosting their own online presentations, rather than all coming together under one banner.

However, it has now been announced that Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, has organised his own E3 replacement of sorts: the Summer Game Fest.

As its name suggests, the event will be taking place throughout the whole of summer. Specifically, from May until August.

‘This summer, get ready to see the future of video games when Summer Game Fest brings fans a season of breaking news, in-game events, and free playable content’, reads the official blurb.

‘Designed from the ground-up as a first-of-its-kind, all-digital consumer celebration, Summer Game Fest is a multi-month global festival that highlights video games, the world’s leading form of entertainment.’

Keighley already has some of the industry’s biggest names involved, which will be using the event to make big announcements. In fact, we have a full list of those involved, with more reportedly still to be confirmed:

  • 2K
  • Activision
  • Bandai Namco
  • Bethesda
  • Blizzard
  • Bungie
  • CD Projekt Red
  • Digital Extremes
  • EA
  • Microsoft
  • Private Decision
  • Riot Games
  • Sony
  • Steam
  • Square Enix
  • Warner Bros.

Nintendo is noticeably absent from the proceedings but Keighley, in a statement to Gamesindustry.biz, has said that he hopes Nintendo will join at a later date.

More specific event details will be shared at later dates by the respective publishers, but we do know that some of them, like Microsoft and Steam, will be using it to also share new in-game content and even limited trials of select games.

Steam has already confirmed that a Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition will run from 9 – 14 June.

The events will be distributed across all the major platforms, like Twitch, YouTube, Mixer, FaceBook, and Twitter, with Keighley himself intending to host special pre and post shows for flagship events.

Summer Game Fest will conclude with gamescom: Opening Night Live on 24 August, with Keighley again hosting, which has been described as ‘a spectacular, industry-wide finale to the SGF season.’

‘In these uncertain and challenging times, it’s more important than ever that video games serve as a common and virtual connection point between us all,’ said Keighley.

‘SGF is an organising principle that promises fans a whole season of video game news and other surprises from the comfort of home.’
