Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to VR

A classic from the PlayStation 2 era, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be released in virtual reality for the Oculus Quest 2, Facebook announced at Connect 2021 on Thursday. The “built-for-VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas does not have a release date, but the project is “many years in the making,” and we can expect more details on the port in the future.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the VR take on GTA: San Andreas as “an entirely new way to experience this iconic open-world in virtual reality.”

San Andreas is an open-world action-adventure, where the protagonist Carl Johnson returns home to Grove Street, only to find that his home neighborhood is now in chaos. CJ decides to stick around and help Grove Street recover, which of course leads to organized crime, stealing vehicles, and gunfights with rival gangs.

This isn’t the first classic console video game ported over to the Quest 2; Capcom, Oculus Studios, and Armature Studio co-developed an Oculus Quest 2 version of Resident Evil 4, which was turned into first-person game for virtual reality. We’ll likely see major changes made to San Andreas to ensure that the game works with the limitations of a VR headset.

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games is also set to release Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes San Andreas, along with Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, in November. The remaster will include new textures, weather systems, environments, UI upgrades, and other enhancements.
