You can pre-load Half-Life: Alyx on Steam now, so what are you waiting for?!
Half-Life: Alyx releases on Steam today. Not next week, not next month–TODAY. In a matter of hours, actually. And that means you can pre-load the first Half-Life game in almost 13 years starting now.
Nobody likes waiting for their game on release day, so if you plan on playing Half-Life: Alyx (perhaps due to some government-mandated social distancing because of a global pandemic, say), then you should really take advantage of this essential Steam feature.
As for when Alyx unlocks, that’ll come in due time. Specifically, at 1 PM EST for those of us in the East, and 10 AM for everyone on Pacific time. Brits can get it at 5 PM local time, and everyone else will have to do some timezone math.
You’ve got a little over an hour to purchase Half-Life: Alyx with a 10% discount on Steam. After that, it’s back up to its full price of $59.99. That’s still a pretty good deal for a VR game that is promised to have the same length and story quality as Half-Life 2.
If you’re new to this whole Half-Life business, Half-Life: Alyx is set between the original Half-Life and the events of Half-Life 2. The Combine has recently conquered Earth and is in the process of rebuilding City 17. You play as Alyx Vance, Gordon Freeman’s helpful sidekick in Half-Life 2, only this time you’re the star. You’ve got a pair of Gravity Guns to interact with the local world and a pistol for popping headcrabs.
As a full VR game, you’ll need some VR equipment to play Half-Life: Alyx. Valve says it’ll work just fine on most modern VR headsets, including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality. Alyx will naturally work just fine on Valve’s Index headset, and you’ll even get a free copy of Alyx if you order a new one online.
Valve says that Half-Life: Alyx is just the beginning of a new series of Half-Life games, although we still don’t have any word on Half-Life 3. The curse continues.
