After years of waiting, Dying Light 2 has finally launched, giving zombie fans a whole new world to parkour, dropkick, and scavenge in. Taking place many years after the events of the first game, the world has fallen further into the apocalypse and only a few cities remain standing. Those cities are going to be your open-world playgrounds.

One of the biggest controversies leading up to Dying Light 2's release was its Twitter marketing campaign that claimed that players would need 500 hours to finish it, before clarifying that it would only take 20 hours to complete on a normal playthrough. This has caused a fair amount of confusion over how long it takes to beat Dying Light 2. Don't worry, we've done the math.

How Long Does It Takes To Complete?

To complete Dying Light 2 while just going for the main missions and completing a few of the side missions will take you between 16 and 20 hours. Keep in mind that will have you seeing just one side of the game's story and characters, as there are different decisions to make at several turns that do impact the way the story flows.

Eric Swizer, our reviewer for the game, played for around 45 hours, taking some time in between main missions to explore the world and collect things around the map. He didn't mainline through the story and came close to 50 hours through normal play, so you should be looking at between 18 and 45 hours for a normal playthrough of one side of the game's narrative.

However, Dying Light 2 boasts two sides to its story, so if you reasonably want to see the full narrative and how each choice can change things, you're going to look at doing two of those playthroughs, so between 36 and 90 hours for a full playthrough.

How Long Does It Take To 100 Percent?

500 hours. Just kidding. Dying Light 2 boasts a lot of side content and collectibles to find across the map and doing so will definitely increase your playtime. If you're looking to complete all of Dying Light 2's side missions and collect everything, you could easily double your playtime to around 100 hours, making it around 200 for both sides.

It helps that you later get items that let you locate some of the game's collectibles without having to search for them, and that most of the side missions are fairly simplistic.

However, there are also Gear Mods that can be upgraded several times over and doing so will take a very long time if you want to upgrade them fully. The same goes for every blueprint, so if you consider upgrading all of those to be part of the 100 percent completion then it could easily stretch to 150 or more hours per playthrough.

Does It Have Multiplayer?

Dying Light 2 contains co-op for up to four players and Techland confirmed players can "start AND finish" as a group of four. This means that four characters can all play the game's main story missions, side-missions, and just explore the world as much as they like.

There's one caveat to that, however. The game's prologue section is single-player only, so you're going to need to put a good hour or two of work in before you can start playing with all of your friends.
