Minecraft is now a part of Smash Bros., as Steve, Alex, a zombie, and an enderman are all playable and all surprisingly great.
Thanks to the coronavirus Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is taking a lot longer to complete than first expected but the second of the six new DLC fighters is now live in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and it’s a very special addition.
Steve from Minecraft is the second Microsoft owned character to be added to the game, after Banjo and Kazooie, and he brings with him a new Minecraft stage, new music, and some paid-for costumes for your Mii Fighter.
Minecraft isn’t exactly known for its complex combat so adding the characters to Smash has resulted in a very unusual fighter who’s moves revolve around digging up materials and using them to either block enemies or create more powerful weapons.
Although Steve has always been the main mascot of Minecraft (even if many people don’t know he has a name) as with any Smash Bros. fighter there are multiple different skins, with one representing his female counterpart Alex and two more for a zombie and an enderman.
They all control in the same way though – so it’s really just a visual change – and their simplest attacks all revolve around using a sword or axe. None of them have much range, although the down tilt move starts a fire that can damage opponents and also burn to the ground if it’s on a platform.
The clever thing about playing as Steve is that everything other than swinging a weapon consumes materials, which you have to mine from the ground. That’s what the neutral special is, rather than an attack of any kind, as you try to get a range of resources to power the other moves.
The side special is a Minecraft that needs iron to create the rails and the down special is TNT that you have to lay backwards and uses up lower grade resources. Although the up special is an elytra glide, that doesn’t use resources.

Where Steve really comes into his own is that if you have resources you can create blocks as well, wherever you want. They don’t stand up to much damage, and disappear over time, but a skilled player can quickly build up a wall or platform.
Plus, you can use high grade materials to craft a better sword at the crafting table, if you can find enough time during battle to get there.
This all makes Steve one of the most distinctive fighters so far and the attention to detail for Minecraft fans is off the charts, with the Minecraft World stage having a day/night cycle, where creepers appear in the dark, and all the right music and sound effects.
Steve is available as part of the Fighters Pass, which costs £26.99, but you can also buy him separately for £5.39.
The only thing that doesn’t get you is the separate Mii Fighter costumes which now include a creeper mask and outfit, a pig mask and outfit, and a diamond helmet and armour.
These cost 70p each and can be used with any customised Mii Fighter character. Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes has an outfit too, which has come out of nowhere, along with one for Bomberman and Gil from Tower Of Druaga.
