Why not, then, take this time to indulge in one science fiction’s greatest masterpieces?

Ghost in The Shell got its start in Masamune Shirow’s cult hit manga, and has since blossomed into a successful and long-running franchise. The series was arguably defined by Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film, a historic Japanese-American co-production which went on to inspire the mega-hit Matrix films. After that, it became an indelible part of Western anime fandom, and spawned a classic sequel, a beloved two-season TV anime, and an OVA series that, uh… exists!
Production IG’s franchise follows Motoko, a cyborg with a troubled past who works as an agent for the elusive Section 9. Section 9 specializes in cyberterror prevention, and tends to find themselves in embroiled in vast conspiracies punctuated by acts of violent terrorism. The TV series, Stand Alone Complex, focuses more on those crimes, whereas the movies are basically sequels that deal with Motoko separating herself from Section 9.
It’s the perfect time to jump in, too, with SAC_2045 about to drop on Netflix. SAC_2045 is a spiritual successor to Stand Alone Complex, and is headed up by the original director. The series is the first all-CG entry in the franchise’s long history, and aims to be a jumping-in point for new fans. With how hit or miss it is to consume every other incarnation of the franchise, this will probably be newcomers’ best bet.
So if you’re really excited for Cyberpunk 2077, and you’re also a fan of cyberpunk settings and media in general, the new Ghost in The Shell: SAC_2045 series should definitely be right up your alley.
