We don’t know if there will be a BlizzCon 2020 because even Blizzard doesn’t know.
COVID-19 has upended a lot of the gaming world this year. E3 was canceled, multiple eSports events have been canceled, and developers and publishers are all working from home causing delays to game releases. Even Blizzard has sent all their employees home with care packages that include a giant pack of toilet papers so they don’t have to fight for it in grocery stores.
How long will this madness last? Nobody knows. Experts say that the coronavirus should disappear this summer much like cold and flu, but it could easily come roaring back by the time BlizzCon arrives in November (although experts are divided on this point).
Until a vaccine is produced, no one knows how long social distancing measures will last. And that means Blizzard can’t commit to BlizzCon 2020.
“While we’re all hopeful things will look better later in the year, the bottom line is that at this point it’s too early to know whether BlizzCon 2020 will be feasible,” Blizzard wrote on their website. “The health of our community, employees, and everyone who helps with the show is our top consideration. It might be a few months before we know for certain if or how we’ll proceed, but as soon as we have a meaningful update, we’ll share it.”
For now, as with everything else, it’s all wait and see.
