The board game Salvage Union will be wrapping up its crowdfunding period on Kickstarter in a couple of days. Backers have until January 5, 2022 to make a pledge. The project has already raised over $120,000 to meet its approximately $12,000 goal, so the game is well over 1,100% funded, but you can still buy in for some great rewards.
Salvage Union is “a post-apocalyptic mech tabletop roleplaying game powered by Quest RPG.” This roleplaying system by Adventure Guild consists of resolving encounters by matching rolls of the dice to a series of outcomes including Cascade Failure, Failure, Tough Choice, Success, and Nailed It depending on your score. The system was “designed to flexibly allow you to do a wide range of actions within the game and encourage creativity on both sides of the table.”
“Salvage Union is designed for three to six players and plays in a familiar way to many other roleplaying games. One player takes on the role of Mediator and the rest of the players play as pilots who control mechs within the game. The Mediator's role is to structure the narrative, respond to what the players want to do, and control the various non-playable characters and mechs within the game.”
The board game features more than 20 mechs and 12 pilots. Players are able to choose from between 50 mech systems, weapons, and modules which are fully customizable. Salvage Union has over 50 different pilot abilities. The core mechanics revolve around Structure and Energy Points which are similar to health and stamina. You also have to keep an eye on your Heat Points to make sure that your power plant stays cool.
The setting is pretty compelling. You roam the postapocalypse to “recover salvage which you can bring back to your Union Crawler and use to upgrade by crafting new systems, modules, and even building new mechs.” This of course involves confronting the many denizens of Wastelands. But players will have plenty of time to immerse themselves in the world of Salvage Union. “The crafting is done through a Downtime system that lets you turn your salvage parts into weapons, systems, and modules to slot into your mech. Downtime will also include letting your pilots train to gain new abilities as well as pick up rumors and intel from the crawler’s cantina.”
“You play as a rag-tag group of Mech Pilots who make ends meet by salvaging scrap within a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Your pilots as well as their entire ecosystem and community live on a huge ship-like mech known as a Union Crawler. You range out of this crawler on your scrap-built mechs to tackle the denizens of the Wasteland in a constant hunt for salvage to upgrade and survive.”
Salvage Union was made by a small team of designers, artists, writers, and playtesters. The game is expected to ship at some point in 2022.
