There is a long list of bosses in Midnight Suns, with many of them using the same ideas to win the fight. What matters is how you use the characters provided to enjoy the hell out of the game and beat up as many baddies as you can.
Whenever going into a battle, it's difficult to predict whether it’ll be a standard fight with one phase or two phases, including a boss fight. Because of this, it becomes tricky to categorize fights and how challenging they are. For this reason, we’ll only be ranking bosses based on how enjoyable their tactical elements are and what makes them so different from standard battles.
Spoilers for Midnight Sun's story and characters.
7/7 Hunter As Chthon's Vessel
Chthon's fight earns a place for being something built toward the entire game. Throughout, people are saying how dangerous it is for Hunter if their collar breaks and what might happen if Lilith successfully influences them. While not playing out exactly as expected since Chthon corrupts Hunter rather than Lilith, you still get to partake in a fight against the protagonist.
Surprisingly, it's one of the easiest bosses in the game, since most of your time will be spent taking down lesser Lilin while whittling down Hunter's health. There isn't much to it, but that's because the critical part is the cutscene that plays after, tying together all previous game events.
6/7 Crossbones Vs. Captain America
Crossbones is one of the few Iconic Marvel villains who isn't Fallen during their boss fight. Not only is he doing this of his own volition, but this same mission introduces Captain America into the fold. The actual battle isn't hard to beat, but how Crossbones operates makes it more entertaining than most, especially with how balanced everything feels.
Crossbones will activate his Hydra shield after being attacked, which stays up for the remainder of the turn. You can brute force this away, but it could result in wasting all of your card plays on one enemy. It's a fight that makes you think with every move you make, finding the balance between offense and defense.
5/7 Fallen Sabretooth
With the unspoken rules of turn-based combat, you expect everyone to play along and wait their turn to attack; that's merely how these things play out. However, you don't have to abide by these rules if you're a particular Wolverine character. During the Fallen Sabretooth fight, he will attack your team after two cards have been played, so you'll need to keep a mental note of when his attacks are about to happen.
At the same time, you'll be facing other Lilin and ensuring they don't single out one of your heroes. Sabretooth takes two phases to KO, which can be done quickly when using cards and combat items that provide buffs to your party.
4/7 Final Fallen Scarlet Witch
Most of the narrative involves characters speaking about Wanda before Lilith corrupted her. Nico and Illyana are the two most guilty of this, and by the time it comes to rescue Wanda finally, the fight sure has some big shoes to fill. Luckily it pays off with a multiphase boss where you have to down Wanda and absorb her darkness three times before she’s set free.
There is something to be said about how the boss could be a little more challenging on standard difficulty, but the entertainment is the essential part. Wanda will fight alongside Lilin enemies and unleash devastating attacks at the end of each round, which can remove up to half of a hero’s health.
3/7 The First Dread Maiden
The first Dread Maiden is an all too frightening sight. A towering demonic entity enters the battlefield, looking like an elite version of other Lilin, but it isn’t all show, as this enemy is definitely one to fear. At the end of each round, the Dread Maiden tends to perform two attacks, both of which deal incredibly high damage and can KO a teammate if their health is below the halfway mark.
While dealing with this boss, you’ll need to take out Hellhounds, Guardians, and other lesser types of Lilin before their numbers can overwhelm your team. Though none are as memorable as the first, subsequent Dread Maiden fights can be played throughout.
2/7 First Nest Mother
The ideal way to defeat a Nest Mother is indirectly by destroying the Altars (elevated pieces of rock) before they can be turned into Monuments. Once turned into Monuments, they'll provide buffs for the opposing side, such as dealing extra damage or healing their minions. The last thing you want is a battlefield full of these Monuments because it'll only become increasingly harder to take them all out from there.
Nest Mother doesn't deal high damage herself; it's the Guardian protecting her and the bundles of Lilin reinforcements that require caution. After your first outing with this boss, she frequently appears in both story and general missions, but it's always an enjoyable time showing her who's boss.
1/7 Fallen Venom Church Bell
The church bell Venom fight is the second time you fight Fallen Venom, where again Spider-Man fights alongside you. Peter will lead him to the top floor of a church, where he plans to take out Venom using sound waves from the bell. A good plan since the same sound tactic worked for him during the first fight.
To take out Fallen Venom, you need to knock him down and use the bell card in the same round. Unlike other bosses, you only need to KO once, but getting this timing right is tricky if you’re unlucky on the cards you draw. This challenge brings the fight far above others in the game. All the bosses follow this same idea, but it’s never portrayed better than in this singular boss.
