The professional driver with Trackhouse Racing, DGM Racing, and Niece Motorsports Ross Chastain raised a few eyebrows earlier today for overtaking no less than five competitors by making use of a notorious video game trick, riding the outside wall of the track. Chastain was caught on camera scraping his way down the side of the Martinsville Speedway.
Chastain moved up to fifth place from tenth, earning himself a spot in the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series Championship, scheduled to be held in Phoenix, Arizona on November 6, 2022. The move also saw him setting a brand new fastest lap record at the Martinsville Speedway.
The driver explained after the race that he "played a lot of NASCAR 2005 which I had on the GameCube,” adding that “you can get away with it.” Chastain went on to say that “I never knew if it would actually work. I mean, I did that when I was eight years old.”
“I asked on the last lap if we needed it and we did,” Chastain explained. "I just made the choice. I grabbed fifth gear down the back and fully committed.” The driver said that he “basically let go of the wheel" and “just hoped I didn’t catch” onto “something crazy,” reiterating that he was “willing to do it.”
While the move by Chastain has clearly endeared him to many, some of his fellow drivers have been expressing their disapproval. Kyle Larson for example recently explained rather humorlessly how the antics were "not a good look for our sport,” adding that “I think it's pretty embarrassing.” Chastain appears to be unfazed by the remarks.
