New Sims 4 update accidentally adds ‘incest’, ‘rapid ageing’ to life simulator

A new Sims 4 update has added tons of new features—including accidentally putting 'incest' in the game.

The patch, which was released on 26 July, promised a raft of long-awaited features for the game.

These include new 'wants & fears', enabling players to customise their Sims' personalities to a greater degree; curved walls in the game's building editor; body hair and sexual orientation for characters; plus upgrades which give Sims 'smartphones' similar to iPhones.

However, game patches can sometimes introduce some unintended consequences. Thousands of gamers have taken to Reddit and elsewhere to point out that the update's changes to romantic 'wants' isn't excluding Sims' family members from in-game relationships.

One Reddit user posted in the Sims 4 subreddit: "Why is my Sim getting a whim to ask her own son to be her boyfriend?", sharing a screenshot of the player being given a mission to 'Ask Vernon to Be Boyfriend'.

The in-game prompt adds: "Romantic and official – don't forget to seal it with a kiss!"

Another player shared a bug report claiming that a male Sim wanted to ask his twin sister to be his girlfriend.

One fan responded: "I genuinely don't know how they missed something as basic and obvious as excluding family members from romantic whims, specially because this is not their first 'incest' related bug, so you would guess they would have learned their lesson already."

Another said: "I'd be scared too if I wanted to make my son my boyfriend," referring to the character's shocked expression. "Even more terrified if I was the one who named them Vernon."

The patch has also added a rapid ageing bug, where players' Sims are growing up from babies to elderly adults in minutes.

'Sim Guru Nick', a Quality Designer on the Sims 4 team for EA, said the company is aware of the issue and trying to fix it.

He tweeted yesterday: "I just wanted to acknowledge that the Want to date a family member is something we know about, we’ve reproduced ourselves, we’re working on it. We’re looking to get it fixed ASAP, thanks for all the bug reports, we appreciate it. We’re of course working on the aging bug too."
