PlatinumGames is just as eager as fans to talk about Bayonetta 3, but the decision is up to Nintendo.
It’s been nearly four years since Bayonetta 3 was revealed, with a cryptic teaser trailer. All it confirmed was that it would be a Nintendo Switch exclusive. And in those four years, there has been zero new information about it.
The lack of info led to fans becoming worried that it had been outright cancelled, but Nintendo and PlatinumGames have constantly reassured them that development is progressing and that fans should just be patient.
Now, PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya has said that he’d love to show the game off publicly, but the decision is in the hands of Nintendo, the game’s publisher.
‘If you remember last time, I said that even though everyone was asking about Bayonetta 3, maybe you should tell everyone to forget about it for a while,’ he told VGC, ‘I kind of need to keep to that stance for now because ultimately, it’s not our decision what to say and when to say it.’
At the very least, it sounds as if development has been going well. Kamiya says that everyone working on the project is proud of what they’re doing and is eager to show it to the fans.
Studio head Atsushi Inaba added: ‘There’s no need to worry. Don’t worry about it at this time. Everything’s OK.’
Back in January, Kamiya said that he hoped to deliver an update on Bayonetta 3 this year. As such, fans expect to see the game make an appearance during a Nintendo Direct.
So far, there have only been two general Directs in 2021; one in February and Nintendo’s E3 presentation in June, neither of which featured Bayonetta 3. But there have been rumblings of a new one happening this month.
While there’s no substantial evidence, Nintendo has held a general Nintendo Direct every September for the last several years. Assuming that’s also the case this year, a Bayonetta 3 update wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.
Bayonetta 3 isn’t the only thing PlatinumGames is working on. There’s the online multiplayer live service game Babylon’s Fall, which is being published by Square Enix, and Kamiya is directing Project G.G., a spiritual successor to his superhero games Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101.
Metroid Prime 4 is in a similar situation to Bayonetta 3, with the only substantial update being that development had completely restarted, and that was in 2019.
The game was namedropped during the E3 presentation, but only to assure fans that it was still being worked on. Although its absence was made up for by the announcement of Metroid Dread, a new 2D entry in the series releasing in October.
Bayonetta 3 is in development for Nintendo Switch.
