As the only main quest in Rift Town, Reunion is one of Outriders’ longer quests. It is split into two parts: rescuing an old friend and defeating an Altered boss. This is also the first time players will come across Elite enemies, Outriders’ version of minibosses.
Before you descend into Rift Town to save your old friend, be sure you have a solid understanding of this game’s healing mechanics. This is when the game will start throwing dozens of enemies at you simultaneously, so you’ll need to make the most of your abilities and your class healing mechanic. Without further ado, it’s time to rescue a familiar friend.
Quest Synopsis
- Descend into the Hounds’ warehouse to save Jakub
- Meet with Jakub and Shira
- Carve a path to the Solar Tower
- Kill Gauss
Save Jakub
Jakub, one of your friends, has somehow survived on Enoch the entire time you’ve been in cryosleep. Unfortunately, he is being held captive by a group named the Hounds. You’ll need to bail him out of their warehouse at the northern end of town.
From spawn, run down the stairs and run past the market district. When the path forks, head right. Head down a set of stairs to find the warehouse entrance.
Clear Out The Mongrels
The warehouse is fairly linear with no unique vantage points or mechanics. Make your way to the other end of the building, killing all the Mongrels in the area. These enemies will stick to cover and won’t push you, although they love to throw grenades if you play passively. Shoot any enemies cooking a grenade to interrupt them, causing them to explode after a short delay.
Remember, you have abilities now. Get in the habit of using your abilities and melee attack; the game will demand mastery of them fairly soon. If you get low on health, remember what your class healing ability is.
Healing Methods
- Devastator: Close range kills (10 meters or closer)
- Pyromancer: Kill “marked” targets (enemies damaged by one of your skills)
- Technomancer: Damage targets
- Trickster: Close range kills (10 meters or closer)
When you’re done, interact with the wheel at the end of the room to open the gate.
Deal With The Reinforcements
Before you can open the gate, more Hound bandits will spawn at the opposite end of the room, this time utilizing melee weapons and rifles.
Melee enemies will always stagger you if they land a hit, so keep your distance. If you’re about to get hit by a melee attack, retaliating with a melee of your own will prevent you from getting staggered. This technique also works if you get frozen or covered in ash.
Tip: If you get surrounded, sprint before using a melee attack. This will cause you to slam the ground, damaging every enemy near you. It will also apply a status effect to every enemy hit.
When you’re done fighting the Hound bandits, be sure to loot the arena before continuing. Outriders has an auto-loot system that will pick up items for you (down on the d-pad for controller players, “H” for PC). Press this button after combat to automatically pick up every item in the arena, excluding ammo.
Warehouse Hidden Chest
Return to the gate mechanism at the end of the warehouse and use it. After you interact with it, turn slightly to your left to find a hidden chest. Run back to the mechanism when you’re done looting to find an ammo box, a second loot chest, and the door to Jakub.
Return To Shira
A short cutscene will play, showcasing how you rescue Jakub. Return to Shira to continue the quest. You can fast travel to her location by using the fast travel point beside the gate mechanism.
At Rift Town, travel to the southern end of town. Run up the set of stairs, then enter the building on your right to find Shira’s command room. With Jakub rescued, it’s time to take the fight to the Altered.
Carve A Path To The Solar Tower
Run to the garage in the northwest part of town to continue. You’ll be able to witness the war Shira has been referencing, tanks and artillery firing on Insurgent forces. To help Shira, you’ll need to reach the Solar Tower on the northeast part of the zone and kill the Altered that resides there.
Push forward through the battlefield until you find a destroyed bunker. Enemies will spill out to kill you, some of which are melee units. You should have leveled up a few times at this point, so put your new abilities to good use.
Destroy the pile of debris at the end of the path, then deploy a flag at the hologram up ahead. You can restock your ammo with an ammo crate to your left.
Push further north past a short tunnel to find yet another group of Insurgents. This arena is much more open. You can either utilize cover (Technomancers and Pyromancers) to take enemies out from a distance or rush head-first into combat (Devastators and Tricksters). Kill all of the enemies to find the key to the next zone.
Hidden Chest
Before you open the door forward, turn left to find a chest.
Past the door will be another loot chest. Open it, then spend a minute equipping the best gear you have. The next arena has a miniboss you’ll need to kill.
Kill The Vanguard Captain
A skull on your minimap will denote an Elite enemy. Elites are effectively minibosses in Outriders, and they pack a serious punch. This Elite is a Vanguard Captain, an Altered like yourself that inflicts deadly status effects and uses a Trickster-like Temporal Blade melee attack if you get too close.
This enemy can freeze you and heal himself mid-fight. To interrupt these abilities, you’ll need to melee the Vanguard Captain. Be careful, as stunning him multiple times in quick succession will make him immune to stuns for a short time—denoted by a blue circle to the left of his health bar. If that circle is white, you’re clear to stun him. Should you need more information on this boss, consult our in-depth guide on the Vanguard Captain.
To kill the Elite, you’ll want to melee him while he’s in the middle of channeling an ability. From there, use your weapons and abilities to inflict as much damage as possible while he’s recovering from the stun. Try to stay at medium range, as he can slash you if you’re too close.
Past the Elite, there are multiple fodder bandits that accompany the captain. Use these enemies as walking health packs, utilizing your healing mechanic on them when the Vanguard Captain gets a particularly nasty hit on you. Juggle your resources and enemy priority to take out the Vanguard Captain and his associates.
Reaching The Tower
One more skirmish awaits before you reach the Solar Tower. Most of these enemies will consist of melee Cutthroats and heavily armored Breachers. Use your melee to stagger the Cutthroats, and use your weapons to break the helmets off the Breachers.
Hidden Chest #1
Just before you reach the Tower, walk towards the sewer pipe in the image above to find a hidden chest on your left.
Hidden Chest #2
A second chest can also be found in the opposite direction of the Solar Tower entrance. The chest is resting on an overlook.
Hidden Chest #3
While in the Solar Tower, turn right after the first set of descending stairs to find a third hidden chest.
With a new suite of loot, gear your character before proceeding. Place a flag at the hologram ahead, stock up on ammo, and prepare to face against Outriders’ first boss.
Kill Gauss
Gauss has the same mechanical behavior as the Elite Vanguard Captain you fought earlier. He’ll become immune to stuns for a short time if you keep applying crowd control effects, and Gauss has a massive health pool to boot.
Unlike the Vanguard Captain, Gauss has multiple abilities that are devastating if you aren’t careful. Gauss will throw lightning AoE traps on the ground, protect himself with junk, and teleport away if you get too close.
This fight is all about managing your space and forcing an attack of opportunity. Similar to the Vanguard Captain, you’ll want to interrupt Gauss mid-ability cast before outputting as much damage as possible. Roll out of dangerous AoE attacks, use cover if you can’t heal, and don’t be afraid to close the gap to interrupt Gauss.
If you’re struggling with Gauss and need a more thorough breakdown of this fight, check out our Gauss boss fight guide.
With Gauss defeated, claim your loot after the cutscene and make your way back to Jakub. Speak to him to travel to the First City to find Dr. Zahedi, an NPC needed to unlock Outriders’ crafting system.
