Katy Perry is being brought in to celebrate 25 years of Pokémon but what are the chances of a Diamond/Pearl remake?
Pokémon will be 25 years old this year and as you’d expect that’s not an anniversary that’s going to be allowed to pass without notice.
The Pokémon Company are still being secretive about exactly what they’re going to do, but since the original Japanese release date was February 27 they’ve started the ball rolling with the video below.
Central to the celebrations is something called P25 Music, which is described as a ‘star-studded programme created in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG)’. One of those stars has been revealed as Katy Perry, although exactly what she’ll be doing is not clear.
Also promised are a Trading Card Game special collection and other merchandise from the likes of Jazwares, Scholastic, Mattel, Funko, Power A, and The Wand Company.
The big question though, is whether there’ll be a new game this year. There’s usually something, even if it’s just a spin-off, and currently the long-awaited New Pokémon Snap, MOBA Pokémon Unite, and Detective Pikachu 2 are all known to be in development.
None of them have a firm release date though and it doesn’t seem likely that they’re going to be out in time for the anniversary in February.
What is possible though is another remake of some sort for this Christmas. Diamond and Pearl would be next in line, although what form that might take is unknown. The most likely outcome is that it’d be based on the tech from Sword/Shield, possibly including open world areas.
Remakes of the two DS games have been rumoured for years now, simply because they’re an easy guess, but there’s never been any hard evidence to prove they’re in development.
At the very least though you can count on Pokémon Go to hold the fort, with the upcoming ticketed Kanto Tour event planning to celebrate the original 151 pokémon from the first game.
