Pokemon GO: How To Complete The Shiny Mew Quests

The All-in-One #151 Master Research is the questline that unlocks the supremely rare encounter with Shiny Mew in Pokemon GO. The Master Research is exclusively available to Kanto Tour ticketholders who completed the Special Research during the limited-time event.

Though The All-in-One #151 Master Research questline isn’t comprised of the most difficult tasks, achieving them all is a tedious grind requiring a long-term investment of your time. So if you’re stuck along your journey to discovering Shiny Mew, use this guide to help you out of any tight spots or neverending roads that journey entails.

Phase 1: Prestigious Trainer Requirements

No phase of the All-in-One #151 Special Research will be a breeze, but Part One is focused on making sure you have established yourself as a serious trainer before proceeding with the more advanced research. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

Earning The Platinum Kanto Medal

The Platinum Kanto Medal is awarded to those trainers who’ve captured all 151 pokemon species native to the Kanto region. That includes the regional exclusives, the three legendary birds, non-shiny Mew, and Mewtwo. You will also be awarded 51 Ultra Balls for completing the Kanto Pokedex. Here are some tips for hunting down these elusive captures.

In general, if you are having trouble capturing a certain type of pokemon to complete the Pokedex, you could try placing a type-specific lure on a nearby Pokestop and waiting.
Regionals – This endeavor alone requires you to embark on a world tour to catch the Kanto exclusives from each continent, unless you’re lucky enough to have some well-traveled trainer friends who are willing and able to trade. Keep an eye out for further regional events where you might pick up exclusive pokemon you’d otherwise need an international flight to acquire.

Mew – An exclusive encounter, Mew is only available after completing ‘A Mythical Discovery,’ the 8-part intro quest to the Special Research mechanic.
Mewtwo – The Pokemon Go: Kanto Tour offered limited-time raid battles against Mewtwo and the legendary birds; Zapdos, Moltres, and Articuno. Unfortunately, the only way to catch Mewtwo currently is by way of a Super Rocket Radar. If you still have one of these devices stored away, you may think about putting it to use for this research. But unless you saved one, the Super Rocket Radar is also currently unavailable.

To add to the disappointment, there is also no known way to obtain the legendary birds at the moment, so hopefully, you were able to capture these illustrious creatures previously. If not, this Master Research was designed to be completed over a substantial period of time, so have patience and keep your eyes peeled for opportunities during future events.

Send Gifts & Land Great Throws

The other tasks in the first set are tedious but far more easily accomplished. There are two objectives:

Send 151 gifts to friends. If you’re more of a solo player and haven’t accrued many friends yet, try using public forums such as Reddit or Discord to meet other Pokemon GO trainers and exchange friend codes.
Make 151 great throws. To hone your Pokeball throws, go for pokemon with larger target circles that will give you a wider window for gauging your throw.

Phase 2: Gotta Catch ‘Em All

Phase Two of the All-In-One #151 Special Research is effectively an open season of pokemon hunting. The tasks are all about capturing pokemon, and you “gotta catch ’em all” in order to proceed. Because of this, all of the tasks go hand in hand, making it easy to knock a few out simultaneously.

30-Day Consecutive Catches & Catch 30 of Each Pokemon Type

Despite being required to catch one ‘mon a day to complete the consecutive catch task, you’re going to be devoting a lot more time to pokemon hunting if you’re to complete the rest of part two in a timely manner.

The rest of the tasks in Phase 2 require catching 30 pokemon of every type. With all 18 pokemon types available in Pokemon GO, that’s 540 successful captures. Below is a list of the 18 pokemon types and the best hunting grounds for catching them.

Normal types thrive in all habitats. Thus they tend to be the most abundant and easiest to track down.
Fire pokemon are a very neighborly sort, appearing in residential areas as their natural in-game habitat can be difficult to match. That being said, they tend to be more common in warm, dryer climates or sandy shores.
Water pokemon prefer water-accessible dwellings, naturally. That means any body of water, beaches, shipyards, and the like will most likely be a reliable hunting ground.
Grass types like to roam more flourishing habitats. Farmlands, woodlands, and grasslands are their preferred stomping grounds, but urban-based trainers can find plenty lurking in their local parks, gardens, nature reserves, and the like.
Flying types share their natural biomes with grass pokemon, soaring over fields and woodlands. You can find them in cities, inhabiting nature-friendly plots such as playgrounds, parks, or nature sanctuaries.
Fighting type pokemon love fitness and the thrill of competition. Any sort of sports stadium, recreation center, or notable gym is where you’re like to find these muscleheads.
Poison types like boggy areas such as ponds or marches, or when it rains. In cities, they will make their home in the industrial zones and any larger building where there is presumably an adequate amount of smog to thrive off of.
Electric types have a predilection for hanging around academic institutes. Otherwise, they generally spawn in dry, densely populated areas with lots of concrete, such as major cities.
Rock pokemon are likely to appear anywhere stone is apt to be present, whether naturally or as architecture. Quarries or rocky hiking trails are prime natural locations, while parking garages, transit stations, or substantial buildings such as malls or landmarks are among a rock type’s favorite city sites.

Ground types can generally be found in the same hangouts as Rock or Water pokemon. That is, along muddy banks and sandy shores, or mucking about in parking garages and public infrastructures.
Psychic pokemon are drawn to the technical workings of hospitals and medical centers. Otherwise, they seem to enjoy lush locations or filling in as the occasional neighborhood’s nighttime watch.
Ice types are fortunately not limited to the winter season and tundra climates, though they’re easy to find in those snowy biomes. Anywhere else it’s best to search them out around watery locations.
Bug types are prone to the same habitat as grass-type pokemon. If you’re in a city, check your local parks, nature trails, or even playgrounds. More rural settings include farmland or wooded areas.
Ghost types thrive at night as per everything we know about ghosts. So throwing in some evening walks or even popping open the app between any nighttime chores are certainly worthwhile endeavors. You may find them haunting churches or in the parking garages of heavily urbanized neighborhoods.
Steel pokemon are happiest around infrastructures such as transit stations or substantially sized buildings. However, steel pokemon are only a sub-type, so it’s possible to catch one in a different setting conducive to its dual-type instead.
Dragon types have no true natural habitat in today’s world. So as the unique creatures they are, dragon pokemon only spawn at national landmarks or renowned/historical locations.
Dark pokemon characteristically like to stick to the shadows. Graveyards and theaters make up their favorite haunts, though dark types are also among those drawn to notable locations.
Fairy pokemon are inquisitive with a predilection for the occult. These personality traits draw them to ‘places of interest’ or local landmarks, along with congregating around churches and graveyards.

Phase 3: The Long Haul

Part three is where the real trek begins. You’ll need to catch three times the amount of pokemon from Phase 2 and advance to trainer level 40. There’s also a 151-themed finale to wrap up the pertinent research of the All-In-One 151 Master Research.

You will naturally whittle most of these tasks down to an achievable standard simply by striving to complete the other tasks in this set.

The only task in this set that may not be hacked away naturally is the Research Tasks due to the specific list of tasks each of them entail. However, you may still be able to get a few goals hashed out if you work efficiently. The other ones you can work through simultaneously.

Multitasking

For catching pokemon, remember, lures and berries are your friends. So first, place a lure on a gym, ideally with a few pokestops in range. This way, you can take part in any eligible events taking place at the gym while you wait for pokemon to spawn and spin the nearby stops while you’re at it. Once the lure is done, move on to another area or place another lure and repeat the process.

Patrolling the area while you’ve got a lure down will earn you some extra steps and help you discover more pokemon in the vicinity. You could also place multiple lures at pokestops in close proximity to each other and walk laps between. Using an Insense can boost your pokemon encounter rate and pairs nicely alongside the multiple lure method, not to mention fetches you extra XP.

Going The Distance & The XP Grind

Between gym battles, pokemon catching, and pokestop spinning, you should be raking in XP. Always remember to activate a Lucky Egg to really reap the benefits of grinding out a ton of activities like this.

Hatching eggs is an especially efficient method of gathering XP and one you should be sure to prime a Lucky Egg for. The best tactic is to gather a full set of pokemon eggs and load up all of your incubators at once. Put the shortest eggs on first to clear incubators for eggs that require more distance.

Completing 151 Research Tasks and reaching level 40 come with time and dedication to the game. If you are committed to completing the tasks in these sets, that will knock out a hefty chunk of the journey, and you’ve certainly proven you have the ambition to tackle the remainder.

Completing part three of the Special Research unlocks the exclusive Shiny Mew encounter. There is a fourth and final phase which consists entirely of reaping the rewards you earned throughout the Special Research, earning you even more rewards just for accepting the initial prizes.
