PS3 games have been showing up on the PS5 store. First spotted by VGC, it seems that PS3-era games such as Dead or Alive 5 and even PS2 title Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones were appearing on the PS5's PlayStation Store. But as more users check for themselves, we are getting a fuzzier picture.
In TheGamer's own search, we were able to find Koei Tecmo's 2012 Dead or Alive 5 listed on the PS5 store, and which we were able to wishlist. Other users however have reported even prices being listed. But these listings could be down to a bug or errors due to PS Now pricing, as PlayStation streamer Ryan Biniecki observed:
It could be a storefront glitch, but since Dead or Alive 5 at least could be added to our wishlist, perhaps it is pointing to Sony's forthcoming subscription service, which is codenamed Spartacus, especially as Sony recently pulled PS Plus gift cards from sale, without giving an explanation.
But a new patent filed by longtime PlayStation collaborator Mark Cerny and David Simpson (who may be the same David Simpson who's currently lead programmer at Naughty Dog) also pointed to Sony's intentions for backwards compatibility. The convenient feature has been enjoyed by Xbox users and Microsoft has worked hard to ensure that some current gen titles work on previous gen consoles, and that backwards compatibility not only works but also works smoothly across different generations.
PlayStation fans have been calling out for the same level of restoration, especially as so many Sony classics, or even third-party titles, remain playable only on those legacy consoles. But the new patent, which details a method of lowering clock speeds so that older games (which can only be played at speeds they were originally designed for), among other smart techniques, seems to suggest that we could expect the ability to play old favourites on more modern PS consoles soon.
VGC reported that some users, who have viewed PS3 games on the PS5 store, have seen a price attached, such as Dead Or Alive 5 displaying a price of £7.99. But TheGamer has not been able to find the exact same listings. So the mystery deepens. Whether these signs are just erroneous system bugs or hint at new offerings available in the forthcoming PlayStation subscription service remains to be seen. But full and proper backwards compatibility would be pretty ace – just imagine sliding a disc of SSX Tricky, say, or GTA 3, or Metal Gear Solid 2, into a PS4 or PS5 to play.
