Sony are expecting to have 5 million PS5 console manufactured by the end of September and another 5 million by December.
Although there’s still no clue when exactly the PlayStation 5 is going to be released there now seems no doubt it will be this year, with any fear of a delay finally quashed – because factories are already pumping out the console at an impressive rate.
According to a report in the Nikkei Asian Review, Sony has increased production orders for the PlayStation 5 to around 9 million, up from the roughly 5 to 6 million it had planned by March 2021.
The move is spurred on by increased demand for gaming inspired by the coronavirus lockdown and fear of a second wave, although even 10 million is likely to lead to shortages this year.
A similar report from Bloomberg suggests that production of the DualSense controller is also being increased, from the previous order of 10 million units by March next year.
Even with these increase though, shortages are likely to happen because of shipping constraints, given most PlayStation consoles – and indeed those of Microsoft and Nintendo – are manufactured in China.
During launch, Sony is expected to use air cargo for faster delivery, but the reduced schedules currently being used by most airlines limits how much that can help.
In other words, the PlayStation 5 is likely to be hard to come by this year, no matter what happens. Especially as pre-orders haven’t begun yet (not least because the price hasn’t been announced yet).
The Nikkei Asian Review report also reveals that Facebook are aiming to increase production of its Oculus range of VR headsets by 50%, to a total of 2 million.
That’s around 1.5 times more than its total production run last year, according to sources, with Facebook now the market leader in VR with a 35% share of the business.
Many tech companies see the expanding demand for VR as an important opportunity given the currently declining smartphone market, with Sony also having a considerable amount of experience in VR – as opposed to Microsoft who have yet to release an Xbox-branded headset.
