PS5 will sell more than PS4 at launch claims Sony

Sony hopes to sell more than 7 million PlayStation 5 consoles before the end of March, more than the PlayStation 4 during the same period.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan seems confident that the PlayStation 5 will be even more successful than the PlayStation 4, predicting that it will sell more consoles in the first five months than any previous Sony console.

‘We think the PS5 will sell more in its first fiscal year than it sold in the first fiscal year at the time of PS4 launch’, Ryan told Korean website Naver, via Google Translate.

He didn’t give a specific figure for Sony’s goal for the PlayStation 5, but the PlayStation 4 had sold 7 million units by April 2014 – so he must be expecting more than that for the PlayStation 5.

Only Sony knows how feasible this is, but the PlayStation 5 was certainly in high enough demand that it immediately sold out during pre-orders – although it would’ve been more surprising if it hadn’t.

Much also depends on how much stock there is of the console, but so far Sony hasn’t warned of any major issues.

The PlayStation 5 will release in Europe on 19 November but in most of the rest of the world, including South Korea, on 12 November.

Pre-orders in South Korea will open for a second round on Wednesday, 7 October but there’s been no indication that will also be true for the UK.

The rest of the interview offers little new insight, with Ryan brushing off concerns about the increase in first party game prices.

‘It is difficult to talk about the overall game market or other game consoles, but I think the value is obvious in the case of the PS5’, he said.

‘We’ll excite fans around the world with the best exclusive games on the market today and deliver a truly next generation device experience that will captivate them.’
