Microsoft really hasn’t forgotten about the past. In yesterday’s update for the Xbox Series line of consoles, a brand new theme was added to the menu that lets users relive the genesis of the Xbox brand. If you have fond memories of the original Xbox dashboard design, you can now adorn your next-generation console with it and get to playing some OG Xbox titles in style.
Originally spotted on Major Nelson’s Xbox podcast last week, this theme is finally available for players to select. Called “The Original,” you’ll need to head over to the Settings menu, then go into General, Personalization, My Background, and then finally Dynamic Background. From there, you can select the OG Xbox theme or another new one called Motes.
Curiously, this update was not mentioned on the official Xbox Wire blog yesterday. That page only details all of the other updates that the Xbox Series consoles received. This is unlikely to be a mistaken update, though, as clearly, Microsoft was gearing up for its inclusion. It would also mark the 20th anniversary of the original Xbox, even if that released in November of 2021.
Since the Xbox Series X|S (and Xbox One) can play original Xbox games, this is the perfect theme for getting into the retro mood. Now we just need an Xbox 360 theme to go along with this and we’ll have come full circle. Microsoft’s continued embracement of its past is something that I wish more publishers would copy, especially since it’s becoming increasingly difficult to play retro games.
