Resident Evil 4: Will Capcom remake follow Resident Evil 3 story?

Resident Evil 4 is Capcom’s next remake target, following the resounding success of Resident Evil 2 and 3 next-gen reworks. Both games offered a fresh take on the classic PS1 titles, with new stories, and fans fear they may do the same with one of the most revered PS4 and Gamecube shooters.

Will the Resident Evil 4 remake follow Resident Evil 3?

Both Resident Evil 2 and 3 saw some significant sort departures which received mixed reviews from die-hard series fans.

Many drew issue with the Resident Evil 3 plot, which ditched several aspects of the story and ultimately reduced a lot of its replayability.

However, one of the changes made to the game tips a hat to the plot of Resident Evil 4.

When explaining titular villain Nemesis’ ability to infect zombies with parasites – an ability it didn’t have in the PS1 original – they revealed it was to bridge the gap into Resident Evil 4.

They explained: “This was implemented as a means of differentiating Nemesis from Tyrant in Resident Evil 2.

“We wanted Nemesis to come across as an even more formidable opponent, so we started considering alternate abilities aside from its heavy weapon artillery.

“We inevitably decided on this final ability due to the presence of Ganado in Resident Evil 4.”

“Ganado are humanoid enemies that are created through being infected with the Plagas parasite, the original basis for NE-α.

“When the Plagas activates, it spawns from the neck of its host in the form of a tentacle.

“NE-α was created to imitate this parasitic quality.

“We wanted NE-α infected enemies to be visually similar to the Plagas-infected Ganados as a means for fans to piece together how Nemesis fits within the whole Resident Evil franchise.”

They added: “The Nemesis project was to artificially create the Plagas parasite (first introduced in Resident Evil 4), thus giving birth to NE-α.”

Capcom’s decision ultimately adds another facet to Resident Evil lore, but they haven’t said whether this means Nemesis will appear in a future game.

However, the original story for Resident Evil 4 was thought to be entirely separate from its predecessors.

When Leon Kennedy makes his second zombie-hunting debut, the Plagas was unrelated to the series, and Capcom led players to believe series antagonists Umbrella were decommissioned.

The detail effectively left the 2004 horror an odd one out of the series, but Capcom may now be looking to incorporate it into a new joint timeline.

Resident Evil 4 is allegedly in the works to make a debut in 2022, according to gaming insiders.

Osaka-based developers M-Two are tipped to head the game’s creation, after having prepared for the game since 2018.

Separate rumours suggest the teams responsible for Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry will also have a hand in the development process.
