It appears that Sony and Guerilla Games have no further plans for the Killzone series, as the website has been officially retired.
It’s been over seven years since the release of the last Killzone game, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and some fans at least have been hopeful that the release of the PlayStation 5 would eventually bring a new entry.
Unfortunately, it looks as if Sony has no real plans for the series, as the company has retired the official website for it.
The site hasn’t been shut down, but it now only features a message from series developer Guerilla Games and a link to the official PlayStation website.
‘The official website for the Killzone franchise has retired. Going forward, visitors to Killzone.com will be directed to PlayStation.com,’ the message reads.
‘While this change doesn’t affect the online multiplayer modes, player statistics or ranking data for Killzone Mercenary and Killzone Shadow Fall, it is now no longer possible to create or manage clans in Killzone Shadow Fall. We apologise for this inconvenience.’
The first Killzone game was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, when it was originally intended as a ‘Halo killer’.
The CGI trailer for the 2009 sequel was an important part of the pre-release hype for the PlayStation 3, but although the final game was praised for its graphics the gameplay and storytelling drew less acclaim – a pattern which followed for subsequent entries in the series.
Guerrilla Games went on to make the more universally praised Horizon Zero Dawn, with sequel Horizon Forbidden West due out later this year on PlayStation 5.
Sony could always have another studio take the reins and work on a new Killzone game but, with the website’s retirement and the fact that the series has never been a huge seller, fans probably shouldn’t hold their breath.
