Yacht Club Games, the developer behind the Shovel Knight series, is working on some unannounced games, and new listings for hires suggest that at least one game in production will be a 3D title. This is significant, as not only is the developer known for their 2D retro-style games, but they also have three new 2D games confirmed to be in the works.
Known 2D projects currently on the slate at Yacht Club Games include Shovel Knight Dig, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, and Cyber Shadow. Now, in a listing on Gamasutra, the developer is seeking a mid-senior gameplay programmer to work on a new, 3D-focused team.
“Yacht Club Games is working on a new 3D project and is building out our 3D team (and custom engine) to complement our existing 2D team,” the listing reads. The candidate must be experienced with C and C++ programming languages for 2D and 3D development, and must possess “strong 3D maths skills.”
The job page does not give any further insights into the specifics of what the game will be about, how it will play, or what genre it will fit into.
Shovel Knight has previously appeared as a 3D model in Yooka-Laylee as a cameo, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an assist trophy. It’s likely that Shovel Knight will return for a sequel one day, but that’s not necessarily what this is.
