Space Jam: A New Legacy hits theaters and HBO Max next month, and it’s also getting its very own Xbox game to celebrate the big day.
After decades of less than stellar attempts to turn games into movies and vice versa, studios have finally started to find some success. Detective Pikachu broke all sorts of video game movie records, and then Sonic the Hedgehog came along and broke them again. Space Jam: A New Legacy wasn’t a movie we were expecting to see throw its hat into this particular ring, but here we are.
The long-awaited sequel to the ’90s classic starring Michael Jordan comes to theaters and HBO Max next month. What you probably didn’t expect is a video game very tenuously linked to the movie to be released alongside it. Well, actually, two weeks ahead of it if you’re a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber.
Xbox revealed the news today and also unveiled the gameplay trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy The Game which can be found below. The retro-inspired beat-’em-up is a product of fan ideas received after Xbox asked those anticipating the movie what they would like a modern-day Space Jam game to look like. Apparently, this is it, and it’ll be available via Game Pass from July 1, 2021.
Much like in the movie, the game’s main characters are LeBron James, Bugs Bunny, and Lola Bunny. The unlikely trio is tasked with taking down the Goon Squad, led by Al G. Rhythm who appears to be the game’s primary antagonist. One of the weapons you’ll have at your disposal as you attempt to take down Rhythm and the Goon Squad is a “special basketball”. You’ll have to play the game yourselves to find out what exactly makes it so special.
Space Jam: A New Legacy The Game comes to Game Pass on July 1, 2021. However, those who aren’t subscribed to Game Pass will be able to play it for free via the Microsoft Store from July 15, 2021, the day before its accompanying movie is released in theaters and on HBO Max. Bad news PlayStation and Nintendo owners, looks like this one is an Xbox exclusive, and will probably stay that way forever.
