Square Enix has finally made good on its promise to get into NFTs and has now started selling action figure NFTs on the Square Enix Store. First on the NFT chopping block is everyone's favorite moody, spiky-haired mercenary Cloud Strife.
For the low price of $129.99, you can head over to the Square Enix Store and pre-order the Cloud Strife Final Fantasy VII Bring Arts Action Figure, based on the design of Cloud from the original Final Fantasy 7. If it was just a cool figure, that'd be the end of it, but your purchase also comes with an "exchange ticket" that you can redeem over on crypto and NFT platform Enjin for a digital certificate of authenticity.
If you feel like throwing even more of your money away, there's also a "Digital Plus" edition which costs $159.99, and includes an "exchange ticket" you can redeem for your NFT, but also a "digital version" of the figure which can be "enjoyed on PC and Smart Phone." If you're wondering why you'd ever want to pay an extra $30 for a digital picture of a figure you already own, your guess is as good as mine.
Best of all, if you do decide to shell out for the "Digital Plus" edition and want to keep your NFT, you'd better hope that Enjin doesn't go anywhere. Square Enix has kindly displayed a little warning under each item telling customers that they might lose access to the digital version of the figure if "Enjin services become unavailable."
Unfortunately, NFTs based on properties like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest were only a matter of time. Square Enix is probably the most NFT-friendly publisher out there at the moment, and it even sold off high-profile franchises like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Thief to Embracer Group so it could invest more money into blockchain tech. This Cloud Strife figure is likely the first of many future dalliances into NFTs and the blockchain, so all we can do is cross our fingers and hope our favorite Square Enix characters aren't next.
