There is no shortage of events and festivals in Stardew Valley. One of the festivals is the annual Luau. During the Luau, you will get to interact with the residents of Pelican Town, and contribute to the communal soup.
This guide is going to go over everything you need to know about the Luau. The big reward for this event is friendship points, so we will also go over how to get the best outcome.
When Does The Luau Take Place?
The Luau takes place every year on Summer 11. The event begins at 9 am, so you will have enough time in the morning to tend your crops, collect eggs, and milk your cows.
You can attend the Luau later than 9 am, however, the event will end at 2 pm. If you show up past this time, the event will be over. When you leave the event, you will immediately be transported back to your farm at 10 pm. Although the Luau technically ends at 2 pm, attending it will take the entire day.
On Summer 10, the Mayor will send you mail, explaining what the Luau is. He will mention that you will need to bring something to add to the communal potluck. We will go over this later, as well as what items are the best to bring.
The Luau’s Location
You know when the Luau takes place, but where is it? The Luau will occur on the beach, just south of Pelican Town.
This area will be blocked off until 9 am, when the event starts. To get here just head to Pelican Town and take the bridge south of the Mayor’s house. Remember, if you leave the beach, the event will end!
Special Items For Purchase At The Luau
During the Luau, you will also be able to purchase limited items from Pierre. Right as you enter the beach, Pierre will be set up to the right. Below are the items available as well as their prices.
- Wall Palm: 1,000g
- Jungle Decal (4 variations): 800g
- Ceiling Leaves (3 variations): 400g
- Totem Pole: 1,000g
- Starfruit: 3,000g
- Plain Torch: 700g
These items will be available every year of the Luau. If for some reason, you can’t buy them all, they will come again next year.
Adding To The Soup
The main event of the Luau is the potluck. When you enter the Luau at the beach, you will see four tables surrounding a giant pot of soup. Walk around and explore the Luau, and eventually add your item to the soup. When you are ready, talk to the Mayor to get the tasting started. Once the tasting is done, the event will end.
The Luau is attended by the Governor, who will taste this soup. Your goal is to add the best item to the soup, which will impress the Governor.
There are six different responses that the Governor will give. Depending on his response, you will also gain or lose friendship points with the residents of Pelican Town. Pretty much every edible item in the game can be added to the soup. This is a lot, so we are going to go over the best response, as well as responses that you do not want to get.
- Missing Something – This means that you didn’t add anything to the soup! You will not gain or lose friendship points.

Where To Find The Mayor’s Shorts
On Summer 3, the Mayor will ask you to find his purple shorts. The shorts can be found in Marnie’s bedroom. If you are close enough with Marnie, you can enter her room and grab the shorts.
Instead of giving the purple shorts back to the Mayor, you will be able to hold on to them, and even add them to the soup at the Luau! Doing so will unlock secret responses for the Mayor and the Governor. The Governor will comment how ‘tangy’ the soup is, and then realize that something is floating in it.
That’s all there is to the Luau! Once it’s done, you will be back at your farm. After you’ve experienced the Luau, check out our guide on the best (and worst) crops to grow during the summer.
