Super Mario 3D All-Stars Physical Preorders Are Nearly Sold Out

The long-rumored and highly-anticipated 3D Super Mario Bros. remasters are indeed real, and they’re launching later this week on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo announced the compilation during a surprise Nintendo Direct celebrating the plumber’s 35th anniversary. Super Mario 3D All-Stars releases September 18 on Nintendo Switch for $60, and it’s available to preorder. As of September 16, physical copies are sold out everywhere except Best Buy, which will only let you schedule an in-store pickup at this point (curbside pickup is available).

Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be available to purchase until March 31, 2021, and the physical edition will likely sell out much sooner. It’s the same strategy being used for Super Mario Bros. 35, a new free-to-play Mario battle royale announced during the Direct. The limited run is somewhat similar to what Nintendo did for Mario’s 25th anniversary by re-releasing Super Mario All-Stars for Wii.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundles three iconic Mario games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Each game has received performance enhancements and even some new features. Super Mario 64, for example, now supports Joy-Con rumble and has gotten a nice resolution bump. You can also turn on any of the songs from the beloved soundtrack while playing. Super Mario Sunshine has a 16:9 aspect ratio, rumble support, and soundtrack browsing, while Super Mario Galaxy is playable in a higher resolution than the original.

The remaster collection earned an 8/10 in our Super Mario 3D All-Stars review. “Taken all together, Mario 3D All-Stars is a worthwhile collection, featuring the best versions of Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy to appear on a Nintendo system,” editor Kevin Knezevic wrote. “Despite their age, the games are still rife with inventive ideas and surprises, which more than makes up for the collection’s presentational shortcomings.”

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is just one of several new Mario games for Switch announced during the Direct. It’ll be joined by Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and a creative new Mario Kart AR game.
