Supermassive’s Upcoming Horror Game The Quarry Will Have 186 Different Endings

The release of Supermassive Games' new narrative-driven horror title The Quarry is a little over a month away, and the game's director, Will Byles, has been speaking about some of the difficulties developers and actors face when trying to construct a branching narrative that can be affetced by player choice.

In an interview with IGN (thanks PushSquare), Byles reveals that The Quarry will have 186 different endings for players to experience, with the stories that the game's nine characters can have being "massively varied." Byles also reveals that actors working on The Quarry were given a script that is "over 1,000 pages" long – usually they work with a script of around 100 pages – and that they record up to 50 pages a day in some instances.

Of course, it's very unlikely that The Quarry branches out into 186 incredibly distinct endings, that would be a technical impossibility. These endings will likely just be different permutations of very similar endings, but each character will have a different relationship with others depending on your actions throughout the game. Then there's the fact that all nine playable characters can actually die, so there's plenty of different combinations where some could escape unharmed where others didn't.

Still, if that sounds like a bit too much work for you, you'll be pleased to know that The Quarry will also feature a movie mode. The "Director's Chair" option will allow players to simply watch events unfold whilst still being able to decide where the story actually goes – a great option for those that just feel like sitting back and watching a good old-fashioned horror flick.

The Quarry will launch on June 10 later this year for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
