The Witcher is getting its own augmented-reality, real-time location-based game for Android and iOS, slotting into a trend popularized by Pokemon Go. The Witcher: Monster Slayer is pitched as a role-playing experience on the go, incorporating some elements from the main franchise.
At its core, Monster Slayer is what you expect. You’ll walk around areas looking for signs of monsters to hunt, with the events of the AR adventure pre-dating those in the trilogy of games. Monsters are plentiful and Witchers are sparse, encouraging players to take up the mantle and help those in need around them. That means taking quests from villagers nearby, while also stocking up on items from roaming merchants and investigating scenes left by dangerous foes.

When you find a monster to kill, the game takes a more active approach to combat that is akin to The Elder Scrolls: Blades. You’ll engage in first-person combat, equipped with a silver sword, magical signs, and potions to help you take down a variety of challenging creatures. Spokko, the developer owned by CD Projekt Red, explains that Monster Slayer will also feature story elements and characters for you to interact with on your journey, interspersed between all the monster slaying.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is slated to launch soon for both Android and iOS but comes at a strange time when the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced other similar games to adjust to the various lockdowns globally. CD Projekt Red is gearing up to launch their futuristic RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, later this year. It has also expressed the desire to return to The Witcher franchise in the future too.
