Uncharted star Tom Holland has just shared a first look at his portrayal of treasure-hunter Nathan Drake via Instagram–check out the image below. His pose is very similar to the cover of Uncharted 3. Hardcore film buffs and PlayStation fans will probably instantly notice that in his portrayal, at least based on this photo, Nathan shirt still doesn’t have its iconic French tuck look. Otherwise, his outfit is essentially what we saw from the games, though he does look noticeably younger than he did in even the prequel Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

If you can let that inaccuracy slide, there’s room for plenty more excitement about the movie: Even though the pandemic has pretty much warped everyone’s sense of time and wreaked all kinds of havoc on most movie production, the long-in-development Uncharted movie is apparently already nearly done filming. This update came through a since-expired Instagram Story shared by Holland, who’s best known for his turn as Spider-Man in the MCU.
Although filming on the video-game adaptation had begun only in July, this relatively quick beeline to the finish line–during COVID-19, no less–is comparatively a tiny stretch in what has been effectively development hell for the movie based on the popular PlayStation series: The movie has been gestating and facing all sorts of delays off and on over the last decade. Fortunately, the Holland Instagram tease isn’t the only proof that the movie is indeed moving along–on Twitter, Holland also signal boosted a tweet from his voice-actor counterpart Nolan North, who shared some photos from a set visit.
In September, Holland took to Instagram to report, “Filming is going so well–the film is like everything I’ve ever dreamed it would be. I was such a huge fan of the game, and it’s been going so well. I do have the biggest bruise of all time on my leg, but it’s in a bit of a revealing area for Instagram Live. I think I would get shut down by Instagram. But it is a glorious bruise.”
All that’s really known about the Uncharted movie, which is due to hit theaters July 16, 2021, will be a prequel of sorts for the games. The film has been nosing forward for so long that at one point Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter, Entourage) was originally cast to play a young Nathan Drake, but he will now instead portray Victor “Sully” Sullivan–Drake’s frequent traveling companion, occasional mentor, and father figure. Filmmaker Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) will direct, and Antonio Banderas (The Expendables 3), Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy), and Tati Gabrielle (The Owl House) also co-star.
Just before COVID-19 spread to the US, HBO had announced it had picked up a TV series based The Last of Us, another popular Naughty Dog series. The project is still reportedly moving forward with writing, though no major developments have come out since the initial announcement.
