Virtua Sonic Is A Fan-Made Sonic Game That Lets You Go Fast In VR

Have you ever wanted to sprint through the legendary Green Hill Zone as a cartoonish blue hedgehog in virtual reality? If the answer is yes, then you’re in luck: Virtua Sonic is a fan-made Sonic the Hedgehog game in VR – and from the looks of it, it’s pretty fast.

The official trailer for Virtua Sonic was recently shared on YouTube, offering us a look into the game’s take on iconic levels from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It’s strange seeing them from a first-person perspective, mind, but I’d imagine it’s even weirder being completely surrounded by them in virtual reality.

According to the Virtua Sonic’s official page on Sonic Fan Games, it features an all-new story that is “sure to tickle long-time fans of the series.” As mentioned above, it includes a range of iconic levels from previous Sonic games, as well as original enemies and the renowned rings that Sonic can’t seem to get enough of.

If you check out the trailer, you’ll see that all of this is true – from treacherous beams you can skate on to its high octane soundtrack, this is a Sonic game made by people who evidently love Sonic.

“This project’s goal is to push the boundaries of what sorts of experiences are capable in virtual reality, showcasing the potential of the medium as it pertains to high-speed action games,” reads the Virtua Sonic mission statement.

The game also lists a decent amount of recent updates, highlighting the fact that the team has dedicated a significant amount of time to maintaining it so far.

The obvious concession here is that a lot of people get motion sickness from even the most low-intensity VR games, so sprinting up loop-the-loops and dashing over bodies of water probably won’t be the best fit for everyone.

According to the game’s official web page, Virtua Sonic works with all VR headsets that are compatible with SteamVR.
