Microsoft has issued a fix for Windows 11’s troubled gaming performance. After the 22H2 update hit Windows 11 in September, users started reporting poor game performance, including hitches, stuttering, and lowered frame rates. Windows placed a hold on hardware for future updates and recommended those suffering from the glitch roll back to the previous update.
"Some games and apps might experience lower than expected performance or stuttering on Windows 11, version 22H2," wrote Microsoft at the time. "Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers."
Nvidia released new drivers in the time since then which helped some PC gamers, while Microsoft has been working on a fix for the past few weeks. First spotted by The Verge, hat fix is now available through Windows Update. Look for the "KB5020044 update preview" and allow Windows Update to run the patch to acquire Microsoft’s gaming fix.
As noted in the update notes, "[KB5020044] addresses an issue that affects the performance of some games and applications. This issue is related to GPU performance debugging features."
In addition to fixing game performance, the new update also provides Microsoft OneDrive subscribers with new storage alerts that can be activated on the Systems page in the Settings menu, and also provides OneDrive subscribers with their full storage capacity. The update also combines Windows Spotlight and Themes on the personalization page.
While PC gaming might be back on the menu for Windows 11 users, Xbox players that make use of emulation software had better be careful with what they do to screen captures and video footage. The Emulation Discord channel has reported that some users are receiving account suspensions for uploading emulated media. The moderator for the channel warned users to disable auto-uploads if they're using emulators to prevent being accidentally suspended or possibly even banned.
