Xbox Series X release date – When can I pre-order the next-gen Xbox?

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S promises to bring harsh competition against Sony’s PS5 later this year, as both developers go head-to-head around the holiday season. Currently, it appears Microsoft is a step ahead of their competitors, as they have released a slew of details about their console, while Sony has drip-fed information to their fans.

When can you pre-order the next-gen Xbox?

Microsoft has revealed a host of details about its new landmark console since they announced it earlier this year.

People can expect massively improved specifications with the new machine, including one terabyte of custom SSD, up to 120 FPS and true 4K gaming.

While Microsoft has been forthright with most aspects of the new console, they have remained tight-lipped about the impending release date.

Currently, the developers have the console slated for a “holiday 2020” release date, alongside the PS5.

There is also no prospective date for pre-orders on the horizon.

Much like the PS5, some retailers have accepted sign-ups for those who want a notification when the Series X is available for pre-order.

Both American and British retailers have introduced the function.

The following US retailers have offered Xbox Series X sign-ups:

  • Best Buy
  • Walmart
  • GameStop
  • Target

The following UK retailers will allow people to register their interest:

  • Smyth’s Toys
  • GAME
  • Curry’s.co.uk

While Microsoft is yet to reveal when pre-orders might be released, experts have an inkling of when this could be.

COVID-19 permitting, the Series X will likely release pre-orders around the time of Microsoft’s digital event in June this year.

They have scheduled an online showcase of their upcoming games and projects to take place when E3 would usually.

The event will come when Microsoft releases their last Xbox One X limited edition console before the dawn of the new generation.

When the console does finally come, rumours suggest the price will debut between $450 and $549 (£364 to £444).

While Microsoft has not confirmed this yet, Xbox American executive Phil Spencer promised the price would be “agile”.

He said: “You have to set a price target at the beginning for yourselves, and then you kind of roll in as you see the competition come in and you start to do your go-to-market planning.

“I feel good about the price that we’re going to be able to get to. I feel good about the price and the performance capabilities that we have with Series X.”
