Xbox Series X Storage Expansion Card is £220 – only £30 less than Xbox Series S

The 1TB SSD storage expansion card for the Xbox Series X and S is much more expensive than previously thought in the UK.

Microsoft has confirmed the cost of the next gen Xbox SSD expansion card and it’s not good news: instead of being £160 in the UK, it’s actually £220.

It’s now up for pre-order in the Microsoft Store and proportionally is much more expensive than in the US, where it costs $220 (£173).

The £160 price was briefly listed by Smyths, which was assumed to be a legitimate leak but now just seems to have been an error (or Microsoft changed the price at the last minute).

The unfortunate fact now is that the card is only £30 cheaper than an Xbox Series S and considering the Series S only has a 512GB internal hard drive it’s going to need the expansion card more than the Series X.

In a blog describing the device, Microsoft point out that because the Xbox Series S can’t display at native 4K it won’t need the 4K textures that make up a large part of next gen game installs, so Xbox Series S games will be notably smaller downloads than their Series X equivalents.

As for why it’s so expensive though, Microsoft claims that, ‘This level of consistent, sustained performance requires advanced components which comes at a higher cost than traditional hard drives or SSDs often found in PCs.

‘By partnering with an industry leader in Seagate, we worked together to deliver an expandable storage solution which delivers identical performance at the lowest cost possible and available this holiday.’
