Zelda 35th Anniversary is taking place this month, and fans are wondering if there will be a big Zelda Direct full of announcements. Last year saw the other famous Nintendo icon – Mario – celebrate his 35th birthday. And to mark the moustachioed plumber’s big anniversary Nintendo aired a Mario Direct full of Nintendo Switch announcements.
The soon-to-be released Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was announced during Mario Direct last September, along with an AR Mario Kart game and Super Mario 3D All Stars.
The Mario 35th Anniversary Direct aired in the run-up to the anniversary of the original release of Super Mario Bros for the Famicom.
Super Mario Bros first launched on the Famicom in Japan on September 13 1985, with the Mario Anniversary Direct being held on September 3 2020.
The original release of The Legend of Zelda on the Famicom was February 21 1986, and fans are hoping a Zelda Direct could air in the run up to this upcoming anniversary.
Nintendo announce Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is ‘in development’
And ahead of a potentially inbound Zelda Direct an interesting filing has been spotted which could hint at an unannounced Switch release.
The filing was spotted by Nintendo leaker Kelios, who has correctly leaked the date of a past Nintendo Direct as well as hinting at what is planned for this year’s Pokemon birthday.
In February the Pokemon series turns 25.
And the trademark that Kelios spotted could hint DS classic Phantom Hourglass is heading to the Nintendo Switch.
Kelios recently tweeted: “A few days ago, Phantom Hourglass trademark accepted in Australia”.
The filing of this trademark is interesting, with it happening in the run-up to the big Zelda anniversary.
And that’s not the only Zelda-related trademark that Nintendo has filed.
Earlier today Kelios tweeted to say Wind Waker has also been the subject of another new filing.
If Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass are heading to the Switch it remains to be seen how these Nintendo classics will be released.
Will these games be released individually or as part of a compilation like Super Mario All-Stars 3D?
And if these games are being released as part of a compilation, will they be included in one massive Zelda release or in a few different ones?
It would surely make sense for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to be bundled together for a Switch re-release. Both of these games got Wii U HD remasters so could work well included in a single release, possibly alongside the long rumoured Skyward Sword remaster.
But would Phantom Hourglass be included in this release as well, or could it feature in another compilation – possibly one that features other Zelda handheld classics like Spirit Tracks?
We’ll have to wait and see, but with only a few weeks left till the Zelda anniversary falls fans shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out for certain.
