Post Malone covered Hootie and the Blowfish for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, and it’s actually good

On Thursday morning, Post Malone released a very special song: a cover of Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be With You” in celebration of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. This Saturday, Post Malone will perform this song (and others!) at a Pokémon virtual concert on the Pokémon YouTube and Twitch channels.

Unfortunately, Post Malone has not inserted any Pokémon references into “Only Wanna Be With You.” There’s not even one mention of Pikachu. It feels like a missed opportunity to me, but the cover is still good — a pretty faithful rendition of the song with some Pokémon-esque game samples. (There is one reference changed, but it’s a football one: the Miami Dolphins to the Dallas Cowboys, which is Post Malone’s favorite team. Now you know!)

I’m sure you’re asking, why Hootie and the Blowfish? Well, here’s my best guess: “Only Wanna Be With You” was released in 1995, and Pokémon was released in 1996. And honestly, that’s enough of a connection for me. For a long time, the only CDs I owned as a child were Grammys compilations — and that’s why I have this nostalgic fondness for Hootie and the Blowfish.

(For what it’s worth, Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be With You” wasn’t on the 1996 Grammys CD — but “Let Her Cry” was.)

Alongside the new Post Malone song, The Pokémon Company announced Thursday morning that it’ll broadcast a Pokémon Presents video on Friday at 10 a.m. ET. No real details were announced regarding what to expect, but plenty are speculating that it’ll be where the company announces remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
