Update: Following reports of the massive 84.4GB update that is only being served to Xbox One players, Activision have stated the the file size is a bug and is currently being investigated. Another GameSpot staff member was only presented with a 33.01GB update on Xbox One, indicating that a fix might already be live. Original story follows.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Season 4 update is live, and it’s a big one. Some players who are loading the game up now on Xbox One are being prompted to download an 84.8GB update–much, much bigger than most full games.
Infinity Ward warned us that the file size would be big, but this is beyond what we imagined. We’ve seen suggestions on Twitter that the PS4 update is smaller at 32GB, although I’m unable to verify, having deleted the game off my own system to save space.
The update, which was believed to hover between 44.3 GB on Xbox One ahead of launch, is perhaps the biggest patch we’ve ever seen–it’s so big that the phrase “84GB” is now trending worldwide on Twitter. Strangely, some other players on Xbox One are receiving a much smaller download, although “much smaller” does not mean “small”.
One GameSpot editor has personally verified the 84.8GB file size on their personal Xbox One.
The update adds plenty to the game, across both Modern Warfare and the battle royale spin-off Warzone, but it comes at a heavier price, space-wise, than many players will be willing to pay.
Players who feel comfortable deleting all 107GB of Red Dead Redemption 2 to make space for the update with be able to unlock Captain Price as part of the game’s new Battle Pass, so that’s something.
